The divisions selected, 8th (Regular), 21st (New Army) , 25th (New Army) and 50th (Northumbrian) would go to the Aisne and 19th (Western) Division was stationed in the area of St Germain la Ville about seven miles from Chalons sur Marne. To command the divisions, IX Corps Headquarters, under the command of Lieutenant General A H Gordon, moved to the new area at the end of April. All these divisions had suffered heavily in the German attacks in March and April and were in desperate need of time, to come up to strength and train such reinforcements that had arrived.

Although 23 March went favourably for the Eighteenth Army and the right flank of the Second Army, by the end of the day General Below had overestimated the success of Seventeenth Army. Although there was a gap opening between the British Third and Fifth Armies, and the Germans were thrusting into that gap, the British managed to hang on and push engineer and pioneer units, acting as infantry, into the breach. By 26 March the line had been pushed back some twenty-five miles, but the French had come up on the right and, although the German forces took Montdidier, they were eventually stopped.

Infantry going back, having been relieved, pass a supply column moving up with supplies. Gefreiter Andreas Koch served with Number 3 Company, 20 Bavarian Infantry Regiment; he fell on 4 April 1918 when his unit fought at Moreul. A tented camp overrun by the Germans; the stores and litter left lying about, indicates the panic that had set in among the retreating troops. A German field artillery unit takes a break on the march. At the left rear is a field cooker and the unit baggage wagons. On the road near Bailluel a British heavy artillery piece lies abandoned and destroyed.
